October at DTN Staffing | Healthcare Heroes & Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Every day, healthcare professionals make a difference in ways that extend far beyond medical care. They offer comfort during difficult moments, provide reassurance to families, and become trusted faces in the communities they serve.
Every day, we’re inspired by the dedicated nurses, certified nursing assistants (CNAs), healthcare leaders, and support teams who demonstrate what it truly means to care for others.
This October, as we recognize Healthcare Heroes and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the people who make healthcare possible, recognize the sacrifices that often go unseen, and highlight the importance of supporting one another through life’s challenges.
Healthcare Heroes Make a Difference Every Day
When we think of healthcare heroes, we often picture the individuals providing direct patient care. But what makes someone a hero isn’t always a dramatic, life-saving moment.
Sometimes, it’s a nurse taking extra time to listen to a worried patient. It’s a CNA making a resident smile during a difficult day. It’s a healthcare professional stepping into an unfamiliar facility and treating every patient as though they’ve known them for years.
When we asked our DTN team what healthcare professionals deserve more recognition for, one theme stood out: the compassion, dedication, and emotional strength they bring to work every day.
As one team member shared:
“Healthcare workers carry an enormous emotional load that most people never see.”
Behind every shift are conversations with concerned families, difficult decisions, long hours, and moments that require extraordinary patience and empathy.
These contributions may not always receive public recognition, but they are often the moments that matter most.
Making a Lasting Impact in Rural Communities
For many rural communities, access to dependable healthcare professionals is essential.
Smaller facilities often face unique staffing challenges, making the dedication of traveling nurses and CNAs especially meaningful.
We’ve seen firsthand how healthcare professionals become more than temporary members of a facility’s team.
During a recent healthcare conference, a facility representative approached our team specifically to share how much they appreciated DTN CNA Haven Romer and the outstanding care she had provided.
That kind of feedback is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
Our team also recognized Cheryl Locke and Paula Hanson, two Interim Assisted Living Directors whose leadership, commitment, and genuine care have made a meaningful impact in the smaller communities they serve.
Their dedication demonstrates that strong healthcare leadership extends beyond managing daily operations. It helps create supportive environments where residents and employees can thrive.
These stories represent something we value deeply at DTN: healthcare staffing isn’t simply about filling positions. It’s about connecting dedicated professionals with communities that need them.
The Sacrifices Behind Every Assignment
Travel healthcare offers opportunities to grow professionally, explore new places, and make a difference. But it also requires sacrifice.
Many of our healthcare professionals spend weeks or months away from their families, friends, and familiar routines.
They adapt to new environments, build relationships with unfamiliar teams, and step into facilities experiencing staffing shortages, often with little time to settle in.
One DTN team member reflected on how remarkable it is that healthcare travelers are willing to leave their families for extended periods to serve communities far from home.
Another shared how traveling healthcare professionals often become such valued members of a facility that they choose to extend their assignments because of the relationships they’ve built.
These experiences remind us that behind every assignment is a person making a commitment not only to their career, but to the patients, residents, and communities counting on them.
To every healthcare traveler who has stepped away from home to care for someone else’s loved one: thank you.
Your dedication does not go unnoticed.
Breast Cancer Awareness: Supporting Those Behind the Pink Ribbon
October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing awareness, encouraging early detection, and supporting individuals and families affected by breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is especially meaningful to the DTN family.
Cancer impacts far more than the individual receiving a diagnosis. It touches families, friends, coworkers, and entire communities. It brings challenges that require strength, compassion, and a network of support.
This month, we’re proud to recognize the importance of organizations and community initiatives that provide assistance, education, and encouragement to those navigating a breast cancer diagnosis.
Our team highlighted several meaningful North Dakota organizations and initiatives, including:
- Bismarck Cancer Center and Bucks for Bras: Bringing the community together to support cancer-related causes and individuals affected by cancer.
- Pink It Forward: Supporting individuals and families impacted by breast cancer through community outreach and assistance.
- Local Pink Night events: Community and school activities that raise awareness and demonstrate support for families affected by breast cancer.
DTN Staffing is also proud to support the Bucks for Bras event this October.
These efforts demonstrate how communities can come together to make a meaningful difference.
A Reminder About Early Detection
Breast cancer awareness is about more than wearing pink.
It’s about encouraging conversations, understanding personal risk factors, recognizing changes in breast health, and staying informed about recommended screenings.
Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment options and outcomes.
We encourage individuals to speak with their healthcare providers about when breast cancer screening is appropriate for them, based on their age, family history, and individual risk factors.
Taking time to prioritize your own health is important, especially for healthcare professionals who spend so much of their lives caring for others.

The DTN Staffing team comes together to celebrate Healthcare Heroes and support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, recognizing the healthcare professionals and caregivers who make a difference every day.
A Special Story of Strength and Resilience
This October, we’d like to highlight a story that is especially meaningful to our DTN family.
Our own Wanda Knoll, a valued member of the DTN team and breast cancer survivor, has inspired those around her through her faith, strength, and determination. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of hope, support, and resilience when facing life’s toughest challenges.
We’re honored to share Wanda’s story and celebrate the courage she has shown every step of the way. Through her experience, we’re reminded why Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than raising awareness. It’s about supporting survivors, encouraging early detection, and standing beside those navigating their own journeys.

Wanda’s story is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and the support of a caring community.
Healthcare Heroes Are All Around Us
Healthcare heroes don’t always wear capes, and their impact isn’t always measured in extraordinary moments.
Sometimes, heroism looks like showing up for another shift when a facility needs help. Listening when someone needs to be heard. Offering kindness when a patient is afraid. Or choosing to serve a community far from home.
We’re grateful for the healthcare professionals, facility partners, team members, and community organizations who demonstrate these qualities every day.
This October, we encourage everyone to take a moment to recognize a healthcare hero in their life.
Send a message of appreciation. Thank a nurse or CNA. Support a local cancer awareness initiative. Check in on someone facing a difficult diagnosis.
Small acts of kindness and recognition can create a lasting impact.
Because behind every great healthcare experience is someone who chose to care.
We’re proud to support the healthcare heroes who make compassionate care possible every day.
